Jean Masthay – Executive Director

Jean Masthay joined TRI, Therapeutic Riding Institute, as Executive Director on July 1, 2017.  She has worked in non-profit leadership positions for over 25 years.

Before coming to TRI, Jean served as Executive Director of Life Forward, Pregnancy Care of Cincinnati where she worked from 2012-2017. Prior to Life Forward she was the Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity TriState, serving the eight counties surrounding Hamilton County. A position with the American Red Cross, Great Lakes Regional Office in Cincinnati brought Jean to Ohio in 2005 where she coached executive directors in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky.

Before moving to Ohio, Jean served as the Executive Director for the local chapter of the American Red Cross of Calloway County, Kentucky for four years. While working with Red Cross she completed the requirements for the Building Chapter Leadership Teams National Certification and the National Training Instructor Certification awarded through American National Red Cross. She also served as Executive Director, YMCA of Murray-Calloway County in Murray, Kentucky where she also obtained Senior Director Certification from YMCA of the USA.

Jean has extensive volunteer leadership experience as well. She has served on numerous non-profit Boards of Directors and Advisory Boards including Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Calloway Co., Murray Art Guild, Purchase Area Senior Games, Calloway Co. Family Resource Center, Habitat for Humanity of Ohio and Habitat for Humanity, TriState.

Jean held an elected seat on the Board of Education for the Murray Independent School District in Murray, Kentucky. She extended her volunteerism beyond the regular duties of the office to serve as school board representation on the District Coordinated Health Committee, Gender Equity (Title IX) Committee, Youth Obesity Task Force, Delta Region Community Health Council and the Kentucky Department of Education’s Board Recommendation Committee.

A graduate of the University of Colorado, Jean earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. After graduation Jean accepted a position with Campus Crusade for Christ to work for International Student Ministries at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. After three years she was asked to co-lead the Campus Ministry at the University of California-Berkeley where she met her husband, Mark. Married for 36 years, Jean and Mark have been blessed with six children, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren—to date!

TRI’s mission, the remarkably inspiring students and their families, generous donors and partners, the dedicated volunteers, professional staff, and endearing horses energize Jean to “help lead the organization down a path of relevant and purposeful growth.” She is committed to “working together with an overarching focus on student’s needs and safety.”
