A Day In The Life Of TRI!
TRI Family Story– The Leighton’s
The Therapeutic Riding Institute’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for children and adults that have a variety of challenges by providing accredited therapeutic equine experiences in a safe, fun and compassionate environment.
Betty Lou Townley and Linden Moore founded the Therapeutic Riding Institute in 1973 to improve the health and lives of children and adults with disabilities. TRI was one of the first in the world, the first in our region, to offer equine-assisted services to people with disabilities.
Through the years, this volunteer-driven community service group has touched thousands of lives in the Miami Valley. We have tripled in size and scope to offer classes six days a week to nearly 200 students with the help of over 200 volunteers, 7 horses and 8 staff members.
We offer goal-oriented horseback riding lessons, enriching the lives of riders by enhancing their social, verbal, cognitive and physical abilities.
The Therapeutic Riding Institute is a Premier Accredited Center with Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International. By adhering to the standards instituted by this internationally recognized industry expert, we have established ourselves as one of the top therapeutic riding centers in Ohio. Only 259 of 866 PATH member centers have achieved Premier Accredited status. We were the eighth center to join PATH International.
Since the inception of the therapeutic Riding Institute, we have never had all the staff working in the same location. Some staff worked where we boarded our horses &the administrative staff worked in a variety of spaces. In the fall of 2018, we launched a Capital Campaign to purchase a horse farm. This has been a long held dream of TRI. In 6 months, we raised $500,000 to purchase a 23 ½ acre horse farm in Spring Valley, Ohio. We moved in June of 2019. This is the first time in our history where all our staff & facilities are on the same property.
